Joyce Pepe: The Metaverse – A key emerging technology in the field of Mental Health
In 2021 Facebook Inc. made headlines with its transition to Meta. Beyond the new corporate direction, the well-known platform introduced its newest venture: the Metaverse.
In this article Joyce explores the key changes that have taken place since this transition and the introduction of the virtual reality environment. Positioning them within the broader context of the increasing mental health crisis, it explores the interlinkages between emerging technologies and mental health care. In this regard, Metaverse has innovative potential but not without risks.
Arturo Esclarín Ortiz: Soil health on the spot
In this article, Arturo highlights the critical issue of soil degradation in the European Union, with 60 to 70% of soils currently in an unhealthy state. This degradation poses significant risks to various aspects of society, including food security, water quality, climate, economy, and biodiversity. The proposal introduced by the European Commission on July 5th aims to address this issue through measures such as the EU Soil Monitoring and Resilience Directive. This directive's objective is to establish a robust soil monitoring framework and improve soil health by 2050 to meet environmental, societal, and economic needs, including climate change mitigation and food security.
However, the proposal has faced criticism in the European Parliament, particularly regarding the lack of specific funds and the perceived insufficiency of the soil health monitoring mechanism.
Eleonora Roding: Next steps towards CSRD implementation
The European Commission is making substantial progress in the implementation of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) by revising the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) originally developed by the European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG). Currently, the revised ESRS is undergoing a public consultation and is expected to be adopted as a delegated act by the European Commission by the end of August. If there are no objections from the European Parliament and the European Council, these standards are slated to take effect on January 1st, 2024.
The ESRS plays a pivotal role in the CSRD, which mandates that companies disclose non-financial or sustainability data alongside their financial information, with the CSRD set to be implemented on the same date.
Jonge boeren zijn kostbaar in de transitie, zíj verdienen aandacht
Politici en boeren staan soms zó lijnrecht tegenover elkaar dat het amper nog tot een constructief gesprek komt. Daarom gingen GroenLinks-Kamerlid Laura Bromet en melkveehouder Amber Laan de afgelopen weken met elkaar in gesprek over stikstof en de landbouw van de toekomst.
Beste Laura, mijn laatste brief ontvang je vanuit Ierland. Ik ben op bezoek bij mijn zus, die hier al bijna twee jaar woont en werkt. Het past haar hier beter en de kroegen zijn een stuk gezelliger.
Jij schrijft dat je niet gelooft in een landbouwakkoord. Ik zie dat anders. De afgelopen periode was er behoorlijk wat onvrede. Onder boeren, maar ook onder ‘niet-boeren’, gekenmerkt door de aan de autospiegel geknoopte boerenzakdoek. Ook Remkes schreef in zijn rapport over de wanhoop die hij zag bij fatsoenlijke mensen. Door te dreigen met het intrekken van vergunningen vergroot je deze wanhoop alleen maar.
Wanhoop bij creatieve ondernemers, die vooruit willen, elke dag met passie in en met de natuur werken en binnen de maatschappelijke randvoorwaarden willen produceren. Afgelopen jaar deed ik een bodemcursus, samen met een stuk of veertig boeren uit de buurt. Van gangbare tot hobbyboer, het was een diverse club. Mijn drijfveer was meer inzicht krijgen in bodemprocessen en uitzoeken hoe we met bedrijfseigen mest aan de slag konden. Dat lukt niet binnen één jaar. Maar we hebben een stappenplan en met veel aandacht voor bodem, grasgroei en bemesting weet ik zeker dat het gaat lukken.
Ik voel een beetje wanhoop groeien
Veranderen is vaak niet leuk. Ik ben samen met veel boeren om mij heen fanatiek aan het experimenteren met nieuwe technieken, minder kunstmest en kruidenrijke graslanden om de impact op de omgeving te verkleinen. De ingrijpende veranderingen die de overheid op zeer korte termijn vraagt van de boerenbedrijven is taai. Maar als diezelfde overheid de schaarse stikstofruimte voor Schiphol en verbreding van de A27 opkoopt, dan voel ik een beetje de wanhoop groeien.
Gelukkig blijf ik oneindig veel kansen voor ons bedrijf zien. Het is nu niet perfect, en ik weet niet of het ooit perfect wordt. Met kleine stapjes wil ik mijn bedrijf inrichten op een manier die past bij mij als ondernemer, mijn omgeving (veengrond, weidevogelpolderlandschap) en de maatschappelijke wensen. Dat alles moet plaatsvinden binnen een context waarin het plezierig én renderend is om voedsel te produceren en het landschap te onderhouden.
Wij zijn de voedselproducenten van de toekomst
Voor mij betekent een landbouwakkoord het (terug)vinden van gemeenschappelijke grond, waarop alle betrokkenen hun strategie kunnen baseren. Jonge boeren zoals ik, hebben hier behoefte aan. Zonder een landbouwakkoord levert de polarisatie die we nu kennen in het landbouwdossier dusdanig veel weerstand op, dat we ook geen stappen vooruit zetten. Niet voor de natuur en ook niet voor de boeren.
Jonge boeren zijn het meest kostbaar in de transitie. De voedselproducenten van de toekomst. Daarom wil ik je in mijn laatste brief vragen of je expliciet aandacht wilt vragen voor de positie van jonge boeren en boerinnen, of jongeren van buiten de sector die in de landbouw aan de slag willen. Zij zijn essentieel voor ons voedsel en het landschap.
Ik vond de briefwisseling leuk en het lijkt mij een goed idee om binnenkort verder door te praten. Bij mij staat de koffie klaar!
